Small Plot

A small bed is enough to start.

Short notes on growing vegetables in a limited space, without special tools or a lot of spare time.

Start with the soil

Loose soil with plenty of compost does more for a harvest than any feed. Work it in during autumn and let the winter finish the job.

Pick a few easy crops

Radishes, lettuce and beans forgive most mistakes and grow quickly. A first season goes better with three plants you know than with ten you do not.

Water less often, but deeper

A long soak twice a week sends roots downward. A light sprinkle every evening keeps them near the surface, where they dry out first.

Keep a simple record

Write down what was sown and when. Next spring those few lines will be more useful than any calendar.
